Evan's Surgery

About three weeks ago I took Evan to the dentist for his six month routine check up.  I was shocked when she called me back to the office to look at an xray.  She had found what she was pretty sure was an odontoma tumor.  She recommended we immediately see an oral surgeon and have a CT scan done.  I felt like I went into a bit of a shock but she assured me that this isn't anything to worry about and that odontoma tumors are benign.  That still didn't make me feel a whole lot better.

We got in with the oral surgeon two days later.  He confirmed that it was in fact an odontoma and that it needed to come out within the next month or it would cause his permanent tooth to go in a different direction and there was no way in telling where the tooth would eventually erupt.  The thing that was worrisome was that he said if we let it go too long it would cause Evan a lot of pain and possible infections.

Of course Evan and I both wanted it out as soon as possible.  A week after the diagnosis we were suiting up for surgery.  When the surgeon opened the jaw bone (with a bone saw) he pulled open the tumor and in it were 12 mini teeth.  As he was pulling these teeth out, the nurses and other doctors were coming in to take a look.  He said in his 16 years of practice he has never seen an odontoma tumor contain that many teeth. Leave it to the Murray to make history for this guy!

Evan did great and is healing like a champ.  And boy does he have a story to tell.

Girl Scout Cookie Time!!!

Here are three of our girls selling cookies outside of Harris Teeter on Friday afternoon.  They sold 150 boxes in 2 1/2 hours.   I was pleased with how friendly and pleasant the folks were that were coming and going from the store.

Snow Day!!!

Sort of a real snow for the kids to play in today.

A New Chapter...

For the past several years I have been volunteering at the kids' school.  I enjoy it and do feel like part of the team but I am so THRILLED beyond words that I have been officially hired (yes - a paid position) at Greensboro Academy to a position that I am going to love.  Subbing was a nice option but this is much for predictable, steady paying and I get to work with all the children as well as teachers.  After interviews with the Principal, Deans (3 of them) and Librarian and about two weeks of waiting, I am the Library Technology Aide at Greensboro Academy and I am very, very proud.  What could be better than being around people you enjoy, doing something you love and be within about 100 feet or less of your kids all day  AND get paid for it?

Evan's first Science Fair Project

Evan has completed his very first ever entry into the school science fair.  He decided to prove the hypothesis that the constant motion of the ocean water and sand is what makes the rocks you find on the beach smooth.   He did a great job.  We helped him glue the stuff on the board but he did everything else.  He's growing up....
